On September 23, 2004, a Peace Pole was dedicated in the City of Athens, Greece to commemorate the 2004 Olympics and the Paralympics. The Peace Pole is a gift to the City of Athens from the Goi Peace Foundation and the World Peace Prayer Society.
An official dedication ceremony took place on the plaza at Panourmou Station near the city center attended by Deputy Mayor of Athens Ms. Valsamakis, City Councilwoman Ms. Yvette Jarvis, who was instrumental in realizing this event, as well as some Paralympic athletes from Greece, China and the United States. The Peace Pole was dedicated in the center of the plaza, followed by the planting of an olive tree initiated by the representatives of the Athens Environmental Foundation.
The Peace Pole will be a lasting legacy of the Olympics and the Paralympics in Athens, in which many peoples and cultures came together in the Olympic Spirit of peace and harmony. |
