The
annual Symposium on the Declaration for All Life on Earth organized
by the Goi Peace Foundation with the support of the Ministry of
Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan was
held on November 18, 2002 at Bunkyo Civic Hall in Tokyo. This year's
symposium dedicated to "Creating an Era of Harmony" explored
new ways forward for humanity, highlighting the role of young people
and new forms of education in the 21st Century. The event attracted
more than 1000 participants including diplomats, educators, as well
as peace and environmental NGOs.
The symposium featured the 2002 Goi Peace Award
laureate Professor Takeshi Umehara, as well as the winners of the
2002 International Essay Contest for Young People: Ms. Anastasia
Rakava of Belarus (Children's category) and Ms. Liat Margalit of
Israel (Youth category).
Primatologist Dr. Jane Goodall and Mr. Jagdish Gandhi,
2002 UNESCO Prize for Peace Education laureate, also presented their
inspiring work before joining Masami and Hiroo Saionji of the Goi
Peace Foundation for a discussion on "The Ideal Education for
the 21st Century."
