The Goi Peace Foundation was invited to present the World Peace Prayer Ceremony as part of the "Sunrise of Compassion" event which took place on Mt. Fuji on July 28, 2002. This event celebrating the International Year of Mountains designated by the United Nations was coordinated by producers Dr. Kazuko Tatsumura and Richard Lukens of United Earth together with many volunteers. The program started at midnight and included guest speakers, musicians, dance and song as well as a traditional Shinto style fire ceremony.

When the sun rose, the 500 participants held hands in prayer and their thoughts united with thousands of people around the world as one strong energy of altruistic compassion. Then at 5:00 am in the light of dawn, everyone participated in the World Peace Prayer Ceremony translating the silent prayer into a dynamic affirmation of peace sent to each country of the world. Many children also enjoyed coming on stage as flag bearers as did the international guests.

Footage from the Mt. Fuji celebration will be combined with several other international concerts to make up the International Year of Mountains 2002 global television special, which will be broadcast via satellite to over 100 countries.
