The Power of the Words
(Original)

Gleb Dubovski
(Age 11, Belarus)
School#4, Soligorsk

You know, when I am happy I always want to share my happiness with other people. When my dog became mother with seven most wonderful puppies in the world I wanted to cry about it. I ran out of the house and shouted to my friend and neighbour: “Sasha, now we have 8 dogs!” I felt even happier then because it made my friends happy and we had that joy together. Of course it is just an experience of a small boy but with the help of Media pleasure and jocundity as well as sorrow and sadness can be lived together by millions of people. I believe that gladness become bigger and misfortune lesser when you are not alone.

I live in a small town of Soligorsk where all people seem to know each other. But how shocked I was after watching the film about the small children abandoned by their mothers. In my town, in  my small little world with kind and sympathetic people. How can it be?  I got to know it thanks to Mass Media. So did the families who made their minds to adopt a child. Thanks to Mass Media ordinary people perceive the pain of babies, their loneliness and tragedy. This is the role of media make us act following our best incentives. These tiny babies are not loved by dearest people; they don’t know the smell and voice of the mother because they are left at the very beginning of the way. A long way which is called life. This short film is broadcast on our local TV channel from time to time. And each time we are given the numbers of the children adopted. This is the role of media and information and communication technologies-to make the world better, make us better. The Soligorsk Television Channel is the best representative of Media in my eyes.

I want to say thank to the people who made it possible for the inhabitants of my town to get to know about the problem and take an active part in the lives of small children. I want to thank the families who decided to share everything they have with one more little creature and become parents to one more child.

The role of media can’t be underestimated in any activity we plan and at any level. It does not matter whether it is an international newspaper or TV programme or just local ones as they serve one aim to help create a better world.

I am proud of my school for different reasons but one of them is that we have School Press Center “VIP”.  The abbreviation stands for “Very Important People”.  There were many comments on the name but later we really understood how essential this group of pupils is. They are really very important members of the school community as they are the score of it. Now it seems that everything goes around them. We know about various activities held at school and in town from their leaflets, we hurry to read new issues so that we don’t miss any competitions or become the members of groups helping elderly people or cleaning the forest on Saturday. Isn’t it the role of media to inform, to gather people for good things? Isn`t it the role of media to remind about such concepts as love, understaning, kindness or show people where they can use them. If some people had not made the film about the orphans nothing would have changed for the children because people would not have known about them. And who knows who will more “benefit” in future so called mothers able to give birth to a child and leave or women and men having “big” hearts with enough love for everybody.

My mother always says that a kind word said by a kind person can make wonders. Media can make wonders as well by calling peoples for noble acts and influencing our best sides.

Thank you.
