Earth Kids Space Program developed and operated by the Goi Peace Foundation offers a safe place for children to gather after school and on weekends, where they can learn about peace and harmony, and respect for all life and the environment through games, stories, interactive workshops and outdoor activities. The program currently has 28 centers across Japan and in five other Asian countries. All the centers are run by volunteers with the support of local governments, schools, public institutions including libraries and community centers, youth groups and NGOs, demonstrating effective community collaboration.
In December 2010, the Earth Kids Space Program was recognized as an official activity of the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD, 2005-2014). The letter of recognition from the Secretariat of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development at UNESCO states that "this is a quite timely initiative and helps in promoting a new vision of a more just and sustainable world. It offers a very creative way to get key sustainability messages to children and young adults, and to exchange ideas around sustainability issues. Based on the stated objectives of the Earth Kids Space Program, UNESCO is confident that this initiative will be a very valuable contribution to the second half of the UN DESD." In addition, UNESCO has chosen Earth Kids Space Program among 13 programs from around the world to be presented in an upcoming UNESCO publication on ESD best practices to be widely disseminated to various ESD stakeholders in different countries.
The Goi Peace Foundation takes this opportunity to thank our dedicated volunteers and supporters for ensuring the success of the program.
