In the year 2000, the Goi Peace Foundation sponsored the first annual International Essay Contest for Young People to commemorate the International Year for the Culture of Peace. The contest aims to inspire awareness of peace in the leaders of tomorrow, and to encourage adults to learn from their fresh and creative ideas.
From among 423 entries from 31 different countries, the following winners were selected. The 1st Prize winners were invited to the award ceremony during the World Peace Celebration 2000 held in Tokyo on September 30, 2000, where they received the Minister of Education Encouragement Award and read their award-winning essays.
