In the summer of 2000, 60,000 children in Japan wrote Peace Messages for the G8 heads of state participating in the Okinawa Summit. Initiated by the Goi Peace Foundation, and promoted through local school boards and other channels, about 300 elementary/junior high schools in over 30 prefectures involved their students in this peace education project.
These children researched their assigned country and then created beautifully decorated messages expressing their wish for peace in the language of that country. The messages were delivered to the respective Embassies by student representatives, and were greatly appreciated by the Ambassadors, who promised to forward them on to their Head of State.
The culmination of this project was a visit to the official residence of the then Japanese Prime Minister, who personally greeted the student delegation. Mr. Mori was delighted to see all the lovely peace messages and drawings made by the children, and also accepted a Peace Pole on the occasion.
Childrens comments:
It was my first experience to write messages praying for peace in various countries. It excites me to think that the message I designed will travel to a distant country and bring joy to the people there.
As I wrote my peace message, I wished that all people of the world can live happily in peace. I hope my wish comes true.
By writing my peace message, I deepened my wish that all wars will end.
Im happy that my peace message will be read by the Heads of State. I hope I have made a difference.
Writing my peace message, I realized how peaceful my daily life is. I hope our messages will reach different countries and bring everlasting peace to the world.
