Profile
Born in Heredia, Costa Rica in 1940, Dr. Arias was President of Costa Rica (1986-1990; 2006-2010). As a champion of democracy and freedom, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1987 for his work of peace in Central America. He used the monetary award to establish the Arias Foundation for Peace and Human Progress, and continues his pursuit of global peace and human development. Dr. Arias has received numerous awards, including the Albert Schweitzer Humanitarian Award and the Americas Award. He has a doctoral degree in Political Science from the University of Essex and honorary doctorates from Harvard, Princeton and many other universities.
